Welcome to physical education at CP Smith Elementary! Our goal is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity. The Grade Expectations for Vermont’s Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities for Physical Education states our mission as number 3.6 Physically Active Lifestyle Choices – Students demonstrate competency in many and proficiency in a few of the skills and concepts needed for a lifetime of physical activity.
Expectations for Physical Education:
*Be Safe
*Be Respectful
*Be Responsible
*Wear Sneakers
*If wearing a dress/skirt, please wear shorts/pants/leggings underneath to encourage privacy.
*Participate with effort
Physical Fitness:
The Burlington School District was very fortunate to recently receive an awesome new fitness grant. This opportunity allows us to use The Presidential Youth Fitness Program and the assessment program called FitnessGram. FitnessGram, which was developed by the Cooper Institute, is a comprehensive reporting tool used to assess physical fitness and physical activity levels for children. This grant will provide us with the most recent national fitness standards of measurement, software to record data, and tools for assessments. All K-5 classes will be learning new skills to increase their fitness levels. All 4th and 5th graders will be assessed on their individual fitness levels in both the fall and in the spring. The health components assessed will be: Cardio-Respiratory Endurance, Flexibility, Muscular Endurance, and Strength. The assessments are done for each child to set goals for individual improvements and to see physical fitness growth. Please check out The Presidential Youth Fitness Program online at www.pyfp.org.
One exciting aspect about using FitnessGram is that we will be able to track individual fitness scores through out elementary, middle and high school to measure fitness growth. The fitness assessments, for The Presidential Youth Fitness Program, are conducted differently than the way we have been doing our BSD Fitness Assessments in the past. All Burlington School District physical education teachers have been trained in how to execute the assessments, and with data collection, in order to ensure accuracy in results and consistency throughout the district.
